The Bad: While both text and photos are generally solid, neither achieves the comprehensiveness of the Big Stokes as an identification tool. Trees are fun to observe because they can’t run or fly away. Size is also an important field mark and field guides do list the size of birds next to pictures. The artists also introduce several design innovations. The taxonomic sort is particularly useful because it allows you to view all the species for a particular family at one time.

Highly recommended. 462 pages, 5 3/8 x * 1/2, full-color illustrated plates Where to Watch Birds in South America - Nigel Wheatley Princeton University Press, 1995. Looking at the Kinglet I saw what appeared to be an exact match. And it will help you find birds: a lot of the information is loaded with useful tips on where to look for bird species at different times of year. I was oblivious before to all but the pigeons ("rock doves" in this book) and sparrows.

While we do our best to provide good quality books for you to read, there is no escaping... My copies are tapes and quite old, however, I am sure they have been reproduced in CD's by now.
