This smaller format guide has been created in response to many requests for a smaller "pocket" version. the original guide has larger page size, greater weight, but includes the nests and eggs, and the birds of Australia;s island territories. They sell it at Australian Geographic shops so if you are at one you can decide if its worth getting. While Handheld Birds may not yet fully replace your field guide, it does offer the first useful tool for supplementing paper based field guides, and for that I give it four out of five stars.

This remains one of the best portable bird guides in publication, tough enough to take in the field, but detailed enough for hours of armchair browsing. Accessibility is particularly important in regional field guides, used in situation where birders don’t have the time to figure out complex systems. Even if you just look up seasons and habits beforehand, it will save you time for looking birds that wouldn't be found during certain times of year. The Reed guide was Peterson’s first field guide and must have inspired him to produce even a better field guide 28 years later.

A really interesting collection of information on the behavior of Southern African Mammals. Lots of excellent photos - very detailed guide book. The dates are confirmed and be reminded calendars fill up quickly when we're back in the field. In general, however, the worst photos are also for rare or endangered birds that are less likely to be encountered by casual birders, and this guide is adequate as a first reference to India's outstanding bird life. But there are 14 snakes that are considered dangerously venomous, capable of inflicting a bite that requires antivenom treatment.
