Perhaps the greatest single contribution of Roman sculptors to the art of sculpture, and certainly the medium of the public monument, was the historical relief. Here are the images and terms you will need for the first exam. The southern portico, known as the Porch of the Caryatids (see caryatid) from the six sculptured draped female figures that support its entablature, is the temple's most striking feature; it forms a gallery or tribune. After the collapse of the Indus Valley civilization there is little record of sculpture until the Buddhist era, apart from a hoard of copper figures of (somewhat controversially) c. 1500 BCE from Daimabad. [99] Thus the great tradition of Indian monumental sculpture in stone appears to begin, relative to other cultures, and the development of Indian civilization, relatively late, with the reign of Asoka from 270 to 232 BCE, and the Pillars of Ashoka he erected around India, carrying his edicts and topped by famous sculptures of animals, mostly lions, of which six survive. [100] Large amounts of figurative sculpture, mostly in relief, survive from Early Buddhist pilgrimage stupas, above all Sanchi; these probably developed out of a tradition using wood that also embraced Hinduism. [101] The pink sandstone Hindu, Jain and Buddhist sculptures of Mathura from the 1st to 3rd centuries CE reflected both native Indian traditions and the Western influences received through the Greco-Buddhist art of Gandhara, and effectively established the basis for subsequent Indian religious sculpture. [101] The style was developed and diffused through most of India under the Gupta Empire (c. 320-550) which remains a "classical" period for Indian sculpture, covering the earlier Ellora Caves, [102] though the Elephanta Caves are probably slightly later. [103] Later large-scale sculpture remains almost exclusively religious, and generally rather conservative, often reverting to simple frontal standing poses for deities, though the attendant spirits such as apsaras and yakshi often have sensuously curving poses.

Lang created one of the unforgettable original places in the cinema. “Metropolis” fixed for countless later films the image of a futuristic city as a hell of material progress and human despair. The great advantage that Calder's 'mobiles' had over Gabo's 'Standing Wave' was that they were naturally propelled by air and did not need a separate power source. These things being so, it is clear that the pure white statue of our times hardly existed for the Greek of the time of Pericles, or for him of the time of Demosthenes: and therefore it appears to us clear that our own concep- tion of the perfect human work in sculpture is not altogether that which the Greeks, our recognized masters, had of their own work.

It seems odd to read in " The Newcomes " the greeting given to this statue which seems to us so modern a discovery, and one has to look up the date and to realize that it was placed in the gallery eighty years ago, before one can grasp the full signifi- cance of the long continued and constantly increasing chorus of admiration. Using discarded construction materials Xu Bing has created two 150 foot long phoenixes weighing in excess of 20 tons and has suspended them from the cathedral’s ceiling about 15 feet above the ground.
